Depending on the cause of dementia, there are potentially reversible dementias as a result of treating the cause. Such are:
- Dementias caused by abuse of drugs (psychotropic, sedatives, hypnotics, steroids) or by alcohol.
- Dementias caused by metabolic disorders such as thyroid diseases, B12 deficiency, hyponatremia, hypercalcemia, hepatic and renal dysfunction.
- Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus. The symptoms can subside with placement of a cerebrospinal fluid drainage valve and the patient can achieve a good quality of life.
Other causes:
- Depression (pseudo-dementia)
- Neoplasms of the Central Nervous System
- Chronic subdural hematomas
- Infections such as chronic meningitis, syphilis, HIV
